Nuclear plant bill moving forward
Tuesday, March 1, 2011
Missouri Senate President Pro Tem Rob Mayer said Monday that bills to have the ratepayers reimburse their electric utility for the costs involved with applying successfully for a federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission site plan are moving forward.
Freshman Sen. Mike Kehoe, R-Jefferson City, has filed two bills involving potential development of a second nuclear power plant at the Callaway County site near Reform.

Oh look a business man turned state senator who is forcing big business legislation down the throats of the working man! On top of this we have to pay a rate increase to fund the 2nd reactor. I guess you people thought he was going to be different? LOL Everybody loves a Mike Kehoe deal right?

Woo-Hoo!!! Come on Jobs for Mid-Mo!!!
asb 2 years, 2 months ago
Mid Mo Jobs, just when we need them - right now! Carbon-free energy, can't get too much or get it soon enough. AmerunUE doing business transparently under the professional regulatory eye of the Mo PSC, uh huh . . .
Well, two out of three is OK for now. It's up to consumers and the legislature to provide the PSC with adequate walnuts to hold AmerunUE to the higher standards required of a pre-construction mandatory rate-funded investment.
Nuclear (nucular as GWB always said) energy has serious cost, waste, long-term control and other issues, but is better and more attainable than many other alternatives to fossil fuel.

Asb I love the way you try and make the public think getting hosed is a good deal while telling them they are getting hosed LOL! Must be a Kehoe team member lol!

AmerenUE/Missouri, have to be kidding alway have their hands out for more money. [ For improvements, line maintance, fuel adjustments , and then for the second recator.]
People can not afford rate increases now.
Let Ameren build the plant [recator] on their own dime NOT the backs of the straped consumers.

The short-sited ignorance on display with many of these posts illustrate quite effectively why Missouri is such a backward, economically-depressed state, and why it will remain as such for the foreseable future.
Don't you people get this? They can easily take these great jobs and economic investment elsewhere. They can even not build any more new plants and just PURCHASE additional expensive electricity by competing with other states on the open market and then resell it to us. However, they want to make cheaper electricity HERE, and GIVE US THE JOBS AND ECONOMIC GROWTH to make a better quality of life for ALL.
STOP BEING SO STUBBORN AND SHORT-SITED AND PULL YOUR HEADS OUT OF THE GROUND AND REALIZE WHAT OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUR AND YOUR CHILDREN THAT YOU ARE TRYING TO THROW AWAY!

Don't any of you realize business has CHOICES to where to locate, where to do business, where to bring their JOBS? Ameren can just as easy build a plant in central Illinois as they can in central Missouri, or even Mexico or China for that matter. Ameren wants to invest their shareholder's money and their customer's money HERE! They want to support OUR REGION and bring some GREAT PAYING JOBS TO OUR AREA.

Finally someone with some sense JCLifer. Are you the only one who can see the writing on the wall. Build it here or somewhere else. Apparently the people on here were not around when Unit 1 was built. There was money to be had by everyone. Businesses thrived, schools thrived, it was a win win situation. WHEN Unit 2 is built I wish there was a way to keep the naysayers that opposed it from gaining a single dime for it and then see what they say.

Failure must be inbred into Missourians.
tonto 2 years, 2 months ago
That failure and ignorance results from conscious choice.
Some people around here are so concerned that someone else might make some money that they don't want anyone to make any money. They act as if they believe stocking shelves at Wal-Mart ought to be a good enough job for anyone, and no one should do better than that.

I agree. We need the energy. While no one especially in these tough times wants to pay another Dime out for living costs it will be a boost for this area. The costs and the time to Get all the permits and studies and on and on is horrendous! Everyone should call their Senator, Mike Kehoe plus their US Representative and Senator and ask them to request that the Regulatory Agencies involved to "Fast Track" and cut through all the red tape for this project!
rmsberengaria 2 years, 2 months ago
Just another tad of information to those on the fence. The construction can only start after the permit is actually issued by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission sometime after 2014. this is outrageous! For more information you can contact MBEF Missourians for a Balanced Energy Future. moenergyfuture.org. Or, PO Box 306, Jefferson City, MO 65102. I do know Ameren has a fine booklet on Nuclear Energy that I am sure you could request by calling them.

Wasn't the Callaway site originally designed for a second reactor? Seems like that would be a big plus for this project. So build it already. This area desparately needs these jobs and is going to require this clean energy in the future. The existing unit has an excellent safety record and has provided the area with reliable electriicity. When's the last time you heard Ameren issue a peak alert? The pay as you go financing seems a lot cheaper than borrowing. How many opportunities have bypassed this area because locals always have the wagons circled?

I say Build it and provide some much needed injection of jobs into our economy! While I hate the fact of a rate increase as much as anyone else...look at it this way, they'll increase the rates anyway whether they build or not. May as well look to the future and get another power plant, good paying jobs, etc.
Prices are going to increase for everything regardless. Food prices, gas prices, etc. Everything is going up. Just so long as they decide to build it and not do the increase and then not build it.

LOL gotta love the Republican paid bloggers that infiltrate the state capitols newspapers. No one has a problem with them building the reactor they have a problem with the company putting it on the back of consumers. The previous $226 million and $71 million rate increases weren't enough now they want another increase? When will Ameren start paying for their own improvements? We would be much better off with a cooperative anyway at least with them you get a few hundred bucks back. Besides that most of the construction and staffing will come out of St. Louis.
JCLifer 2 years, 2 months ago
If you don't want the consumers to pay for the new reactor, who do you think should pay for it? Are you one of those entitled democrats who think the government should pay for everything?
The first rule in business is that the consumer pays for everything. We can either pay a little now and get all these added jobs, or we can pay a whole lot later and let some other area get all the jobs.
catdude2 2 years, 2 months ago
We can pay a little now to get the process rolling for this power plant construction OR pay a lot down the road buying power from the open market. The base load power is near the top now, WHERE do you think the xtra power is going to come from? Typical short sighted tree hugging left leaning liberal BS. We need more power generation and building it here NOW makes sense. Pay a bit now to get the process rolling or see how much your rate goes up when we don't have control of where the plant is! Kehoe has at least got some kahonas to address the issue. This is for the site permit process only, I didn't see anything in this bill that said the Missouri taxpayers are going to pay for building a plant.

I have no problem with Ameren building the NEW Reactor in Collaway County. Ameren should have to build it, on the Investors backs, not the Consumers backs. Because the Investors will profet from it in the long run. Ameren have Big pockets for their pet projects.
Missouri taxpayers / Missouri PSC should NOT approve the rate increases for their boloted CEO [Ameren} can make 6 million pay check for securing a rate increase in Missouri.
bluesfan13 2 years, 2 months ago
You're missing the point.
YOU are going to pay for the reactor. Period. Whether you pay $3 per month for 10 years starting now, or $10 per month for 10 years later is the question.
