Your Opinion: Standards needed for JCHS graduation

Dear Editor:

On May 22, I attended the much-anticipated graduation of my oldest granddaughter from Jefferson City High School.

As the diplomas were presented, chaos seemed to take hold. There was so much yelling in the stairwells that, at times, it was impossible to hear. Air horns shrieked. Some graduates left their seats while parents and friends milled about the seated group of graduates. Some people stood in front of others making it impossible to see or take pictures. All of this occurred while the diplomas continued to be presented.

I found it difficult to believe this all happened while the school board, superintendent, and principal were on the stage! The word "respect" was mentioned several times by some of the speakers. The behavior I observed reflected no respect.

As a former educator in Jefferson City Public Schools, I embraced "Jay Pride." What I witnessed on that Sunday evening gave me little in which to have pride.

It was stated that this was Jefferson City's largest graduating class. Big is not better! I know I speak for others when I ask that school officials reintroduce minimum standards and enforce them. Reinstate respect and Jay Pride!
