Samsung sets Galaxy S II's US rollout for August

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - Samsung says its top line Galaxy S II smartphone will be released in the United States next month.

Samsung executive Shin Jong-kyun made the announcement Wednesday at the South Korean launch of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet computer.

Shin did not say when during August the smartphone launch would come.

Samsung Electronics Co. is touting its Galaxy line of smartphones and tablets as competition intensifies with U.S. rival Apple Inc.

The popularity of smart devices has exploded worldwide since the 2007 launch of Apple's iPhone.

Shin said that Samsung expects to sell five times as many tablets in 2011 versus last year, when the company said it sold more than 1.5 million.
