ELDON - Vandals pushed more than 70 tombstones off their bases in the Salem Cemetery on Wednesday night, according to police.

"Some of the tombstones had already been toppled due to other reasons; however, several were knocked down last night," said Eldon Police Chief Rodney Fair on Thursday afternoon. "We are just trying to sort it out today and continue to investigate the vandalism."

Daphney Patridge, PAVE AmeriCorps community resource director in the organization's program through Eldon R-I School District, was viewing the damage Thursday afternoon with her husband, Paul, who also assists with PAVE AmeriCorps. The couple plan to help city staff fix the tombstones today.

Paul said PAVE AmeriCorps' summer service program has students who will come out to assist with the work.
