Nixon names 2 lawyers as MU curators

Gov. Jay Nixon has appointed two lawyers to the University of Missouri Board of Curators.

Nixon on Wednesday nominated Donald L. Cupps, of Cassville, and Craig A. Van Matre, of Columbia, to the nine-member board that oversees the four-campus university system.

Cupps, a Democrat, is an attorney and represents the city of Cassville and southwestern Missouri farmers.

Van Matre, a Democrat, is a law firm president. He was appointed last year to the state Coordinating Board for Higher Education, but has resigned for the new appointment.

The Board of Curators has one member from each of the state's congressional districts. Cupps would replace John Carnahan III in the Seventh Congressional District. Van Matre would fill an open seat in the Ninth Congressional District.
