HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Rick Jackson had 13 points and 13 rebounds to lead No. 17 Syracuse to a 66-58 victory over No. 6 Connecticut on Wednesday night and the Orange avoided the first five-game losing streak in coach Jim Boeheim's 35 seasons.
Brandon Triche had 16 points for the Orange (19-4, 6-4 Big East), who had lost four straight game under Boeheim three times before this streak.
Freshman Jeremy Lamb had 22 points to lead the Huskies (17-4, 5-4), who have lost two straight - both at home - since a six-game winning streak.
The game featured the most wins ever in Division I between two coaches. Boeheim came in with 847, seven more than Jim Calhoun, who is also a Hall of Famer.
The 1,687 total bettered the mark of 1,665 set by Texas Tech's Bob Knight and Oklahoma State's Eddie Sutton on Feb. 25, 2006.
No. 5 Duke 80, Maryland 62
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Kyle Singler scored 22 points, Nolan Smith had 21 and Duke defeated Maryland to avoid its first losing streak in nearly two years.
Playing in front of a boisterous sellout crowd against one of their biggest rivals, the Blue Devils relied on their two best players to dispatch the Terrapins. Singler and Smith combined to score Duke's first 16 points of the second half to make it 56-43 with 12 minutes left, which proved to be too much a deficit for the cold-shooting Terrapins to overcome.
The victory gave Duke (20-2, 7-1 ACC) a season sweep of Maryland (14-8, 4-4). Duke has won eight of the last nine games between the teams and four of the last six at Comcast Center.
The Blue Devils were coming off a lopsided loss to St. John's. Duke hasn't dropped two straight since Feb. 11-15, 2009, to North Carolina and Boston College.
No. 7 San Diego State 56, Colorado State 54
FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) - D.J. Gay sank a jumper with 1.8 seconds left to lift San Diego State past Colorado State.
Gay, who has a reputation for coming through in the clutch, then hauled in the long inbounds pass as the buzzer sounded and his teammates mobbed him.
Travis Franklin's driving layup for Colorado State had tied it with 10.1 seconds remaining.
James Rahon scored 15 points and Kawhi Leonard posted his 32nd career double-double with 12 points and 15 boards for the Aztecs (22-1, 7-1 Mountain West), who got quite a scare from the Rams (15-7, 5-3).
Colorado State might have pulled off the upset had they not been so off-the-mark from the free throw line, where they were just 14-of-22.
Andy Ogide scored 18 points and pulled down a dozen rebounds for the Rams, who haven't beaten a top-25 opponent since upsetting 25th-ranked Air Force in the 2004 Mountain West Conference postseason tournament.
No. 8 BYU 69, Wyoming 62
LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) - Jimmer Fredette scored 26 points and Brandon Davies had 20 as Brigham Young beat Wyoming.
With the temperature outside at 23 below, BYU (21-2, 7-1 Mountain West) was held to 40.7 percent shooting from the field and well below its team scoring average of 84.9 points a game entering the contest.
Fredette, who entered the game averaging 27.6 points, shot 7 for 21 from the field, including 2 of 11 from 3-point range.
His three-point play with 47 seconds left to put BYU ahead 64-60. After the Cowboys closed to 64-62 on two free throws by Djibril Thiam with 29 seconds to go, Davies converted his own three-point play 12 seconds later for a 67-62 lead.
Fredette then finished off the scoring with a pair of free throws.
Desmar Jackson led Wyoming (8-14, 1-7) with 23 points. The Cowboys lost their sixth straight game and 12th in a row to the Cougars.
No. 12 Villanova 75, Marquette 70
VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) - Mouphtaou Yarou scored 18 points, Corey Fisher had 17 and Villanova snapped a two-game losing streak with a win over Marquette.
Antonio Pena had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Wildcats, who had lost three of four and fell out of the Top 10.
That kind of slump is bound to happen in the rugged Big East and even a return to their on-campus home didn't make the game any easier for the Wildcats (18-4, 6-3).
The Wildcats won their 46th straight game at the Pavilion after losses at UConn, Providence and at the 76ers' arena to Georgetown. Their win during that four-game stretch came at Syracuse.
They were never comfortable in this one against a Golden Eagles team (14-9, 5-5) going for the upset.
Jimmy Butler and Darius Johnson-Odom each scored 15 points for Marquette.
Oklahoma State 76, No. 14 Missouri 70
STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) - Darrell Williams scored 15 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Oklahoma State to a victory over Missouri.
Jean-Paul Olukemi and Keiton Page each scored 19 for the Cowboys (15-7, 3-5 Big 12), who ended a three-game losing streak.
Missouri (17-5, 3-4) lost its fourth consecutive league road game after arriving in Stillwater just six hours prior to tip-off due to travel issues. Marcus Denmon and Matt Pressey each scored 15 points to lead the Tigers. Ricardo Ratliffe added 13 before fouling out.
OSU, which led by 15 with 10 minutes to play, hit 29 of 43 from the foul line, including a big pair by Olukemi with 1:33 to play that gave the hosts a 73-67 advantage.
Pressey's 3 cut the deficit to 73-70 in the final minute but Olukemi hit two more that helped push the margin back to 76-70.
Indiana 60, No. 18 Minnesota 57
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - Tom Pritchard and Verdell Jones each scored 12 points to lead Indiana past Minnesota.
The Hoosiers (12-11, 3-7 Big Ten) have beaten two ranked teams in six days - the first time they've beaten two Top 25 teams in a season since February 2008.
Blake Hoffarber scored 15 points and Austin Hollins added 13 to lead Minnesota (16-6, 5-5). But Hoffarber's 3-pointer to force overtime bounced off the front of the rim.
Indiana led 33-21 at halftime, weathered Minnesota's charge early in the second half and then used an 11-0 run to build a 50-34 lead with 9:48 to go.
It looked like it was over, but the Gophers went on a 10-0 run in the closing minutes to get within 57-54 with 3:05 to go.
Indiana answered with a 3 from Jones, and after Minnesota closed to 60-57 with 41.5 seconds left, Hoffarber missed the 3.
No. 25 West Virginia 56, Seton Hall 44
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - Kevin Jones scored 13 points to surpass 1,000 for his career and West Virginia rode a strong first half to a win over Seton Hall.
Deniz Kilicli and Cam Thoroughman added 10 points apiece for West Virginia (15-6, 6-3 Big East). Jones grabbed 12 rebounds and Joe Mazzulla had 10.
Seton Hall (10-13, 4-7) was held to its lowest scoring output of the season. Jeff Robinson led the Pirates with nine points. Jeremy Hazell, who had averaged 27 points in four previous games against the Mountaineers, was limited to five.
West Virginia led 33-17 at halftime and by as many as 24 points midway through the second half in beating the Pirates for the seventh straight time.
