Snow storm sets Mid-Missouri record

Tuesday's snowfall in Mid-Missouri looks to have set an all-time record for a one-day snow event.

According to the National Weather Service Office in St. Louis, the totals ranged from 16-20 inches across Jefferson City.

The most seen during a one-day event was back in January 1995 when around 15 inches fell in one day.

"The snow started tapering off Tuesday night," said meteorologist Scott Truett. "Now we've got reports of 3-4 foot drifts with the winds picking up, and the blowing and drifting will continue through the day Wednesday. Our concern will then shift to the very cold temperatures. On Wednesday, the wind chills will be between -5 to-10 and -15 to -20 on Thursday. Temperatures won't moderate until the weekend."

"The drifting got bad through the day Tuesday and into Wednesday night," said Cole County Public Works Director Larry Benz."It makes it look like we haven't been over some roads. We won't be able to make much of a difference until the winds die down. We've had trouble with trucks hitting drifts and going into ditches. If the winds die down, we could get the main roads in decent shape by Wednesday night. For now, though, the best thing for people to do is stay home if the don't have to get out."
