Your Opinion: Transformation tax opposed

Dear Editor:

Every Jefferson City taxpayer and voter should oppose the half-cent sales tax as proposed by the Jefferson City Chamber of Commerce and vote against it on Feb. 7.

Put it on your calendar to kill it dead.

Any time a small group of powerful and greedy elitists are given total control of our tax dollars, skullduggery and corruption are sure to occur. The jackboot of the Chamber of Commerce will be on the necks of the taxpayers for 10 long years.

Taxation for non-essential purposes is theft. The ordinance creating the tax has no provisions for outside audits or even yearly reports to the citizens it steals from. The City Council was so eager to do the Chamber's dirty work they failed to add even those few safeguards to the ordinance. A sham unelected board controlled by the chamber decided which of their useless projects gets your tax money.

The possibilities for corruption are endless. Don't let the Chamber of Commerce and their lackey City Council pick your pocket.

We are taxed enough. Vote no on Feb. 7.
