Mo. brick plant suspends production

MEXICO, Mo. (AP) - A northeast Missouri brick maker is laying off most of its hourly workers until further notice, blaming a slowdown in orders.

Mid America Brick opened in 2010 in the former A.P. Green plant in Mexico, Mo. KOMU-TV reports (http://bit.ly/w3pGue ) the company has announced the layoffs of 34 hourly employees, effective Friday.

President Frank Cordie says Mid America Brick is suspending production of new bricks while it sells down its existing inventory.

Cordie emphasized in a statement that the company is not closing permanently. He says a callback of the laid-off workers will depend on demand from builders for the company's products.
