Man charged with stealing, assaulting officer

A Jefferson City man was being held Tuesday in the Cole County jail after allegedly stealing a television from Walmart over the weekend and dragging a police officer with his car while trying to escape.

According to court records, James Holleman, 29, of 3832 Oxford Road, is charged with assault on a law officer, resisting arrest, felony stealing, receiving stolen property and DWI.

A Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement shows Holleman attempted to leave Walmart on West Stadium Boulevard on Saturday night with a television worth more than $400.

Holleman walked out of the store with the TV in a shopping cart and then went out to his vehicle. A police officer was dispatched to the store and made contact with Holleman in his vehicle. As the two were talking, Holleman suddenly started the vehicle.

The officer opened the driver’s door to shut off the vehicle and prevent Holleman from leaving, but Holleman placed the vehicle into gear and pressed on the accelerator with the officer half inside the vehicle.

The officer and Holleman continued to struggle. The vehicle traveled approximately 75 feet in a semi-circle while dragging the officer, and Holleman lost control of the vehicle and collided with a light pole.

Holleman and the officer continued to fight as Holleman exited the passenger’s side window.

A loss-prevention employee from Walmart helped the police officer get Holleman to the ground and in handcuffs.

The officer sustained minor injuries.

Also during the investigation, tools stolen from Sears, valued at more than $600, were located in the trunk of Holleman’s vehicle.

Authorities said Holleman’s criminal history shows he has nine prior convictions for stealing or related offenses, and was arrested three times for DWI and five times for resisting arrest.

Three DWI arrests, and he is still driving? What is wrong with the courts?

meh, I once popped a guy for his sixteenth, this was a while back and he had started his DWI string in the early sixties, back when it was no big deal. He got six years which he served about eighteen months. Six months after he got out, he was killed driving, the body was not tested for alcohol. Single vehicle roll-over no passengers.

Maybe the state should do more to help these people instead of locking them up for their crimes releasing them and locking them up again its apparent when someone commits the same crime over and over again that they need more help then what has been giving, they do the same thing with meth lab owners lock them up for awhile then let them out just to bust them 6 months to a year later maybe they should be looking for jobs while in prison and get one before their released instead of just releasing them into the real world and tell them to report to their prole officers. when people have been locked up and cant get a job they resort to the fastest way they know how to make money stealing and selling it or cooking and selling it. i know you next comment is going to be he had money to get drunk well i can borrow $10 from someone and go get drunk its that easy People can change if giving the right tools to do so, what im tryin to say is that its hard for convicted felons to get a job so the go back to what they know . If he had a job maybe he would not of tried to steal a tv. But no one wants to hire a felon no matter what their skills are
