High heat, humidity continue

Summer is in its final month, but the heat and humidity are sticking around.

The National Weather Service posted a heat advisory for a broad swath of central and southwestern Missouri on Wednesday, from Kansas City to St. Louis.

The forecast for Mid-Missouri called for highs in the upper 90s, with a heat index of well over 100 degrees when high humidity is factored in.

In Columbia, several schools that lack air conditioning announced they would be closing early Wednesday as forecasters predicted a heat index up to 106 degrees. Two Kansas City high schools without air conditioning also planned to dismiss at noon.

The good news is the heat shouldn't last long. Thursday's forecast for much of Missouri calls for highs in the upper 80s.
