St. Mary’s maintains national ranking
At No. 8 in US, Jefferson City hospital is only one from Midwest
Sunday, April 24, 2011
A national health care comparison website has ranked St. Mary’s Health Center eighth in the nation based on its objective, clinical outcomes in core areas: surgical, pneumonia, heart attack and heart failure.
For nearly the last four years, St. Mary’s has ranked in the top 1 percent in the nation, based on the findings from the core measures as evaluated and ranked by the government for Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement.
The website, www.WhyNotTheBest.org, placed St. Mary’s as eighth in the nation amongst hospitals from both coasts. No other hospitals from the Midwest or Missouri are on the list.
There are steps, procedures and a subset of items health care professionals must follow for ....

It's easy to look good on paper. A relative in St Mary's for Pneumonia and COPD was put in a room with an elderly man who had horrible diarrhea and was not able to care for himself. As a result there was feces all over the toliet. The relative had to drag himself and his IV pole down to a public restroom because he refused to use the restroom in the room. The restroom was not cleaned while he was a patient. Call lights went unanswered. He was given meds that are normally taken in the evening in the morning and they couldn't figure out why he was so drowsy and the Doctor wanted to do a head CT. His wife had to tell them what the problem was. I could go on, but after 2 or 3 admissions he would beg not to be sent to the hospital. He eventually changed over to CRMC. It was better at first, but his last visit was a nightmare that no one should live through. Get rid of the paper pushers and hire twice as much help and then St Mary's may have a reason to brag about being #1.

Apparently the ranking has nothing to do wth having good customer service, keeping the place clean, or keeping patient schedules.
What a joke! St. Mary's obviously BUYS this award every year.

this makes me wonder about all the other hospitals. i thought capital region and JCMG were good.

They do discriminate against certain health insurances for the elderly. They wouldn't accept my insurance when i NEEDED IT. i had to go elsewhere. It's really too bad....

Reading about some of these extreme supposed "hospital horror stories" leaves me wondering how "real" they really are. My own experience with St. Mary's has been wonderful -- and this national recognition is the only OBJECTIVE way we have to determine how good our hospitals really are at treating their patients. Props to them!

I can honestly say they take NO chances with heart conditions. I went in to the ER a couple years ago with chest discomfort. They did an EKG which was fine, but still insisted on keeping me overnight and doing a stress test the next day - a Saturday. The cardiologist, who was new to St. Mary's, said he'd never seen a hospital schedule weekend stress tests. It came back bad and they did a cardiac cath Monday morning....which showed absolutely nothing wrong with me, I spent three days in the hospital for acid reflux...but my point is, they were quick to schedule necessary tests, to the point of having doctors come in on the weekends. As I have a cardiac arrythmia, high BP and a family history of heart disease, their concern was reasonable even though it was nothing. I never noticed my room be anything but clean, although they were a little slow to come empty the "hat" in the toilet. The nurses were very professional and kind. I was miserable anyway of course, but it was really a pretty decent stay as hospitals go.

I can say nothing but wonderful things about St. Mary's, my family has been going to this hospital for around 40+ years all of my siblings were born in this hopsital everytime one of us got ill or my parents got ill we went to St Mary's and have never had a bad experiance. I have had my children in this hopsital and they have always gone to St Mary's with broken bones or sickness and again awesome experiance every time. And as for St Mary's not being clean, I would love to hear what part wasn't because I have been in ALL part's of that hopsital over the years and have never once seen a dirty area.

I, too, have heard the St. Mary's horror stories over the years. I have had 2 surgeries performed there, one requiring an actual hospital stay. I have nothing but good things to say about the environment and the care. I've been very impressed by the wonderful mix of professionalism and compassion that I've experienced from everyone, including intake personnel, nurses, anesthesiologists and even the dietitian who delivered meals.

Our family has had wonderful experiences at St. Mary's always. We have had over 20 children there and never a problem at all. My niece is a special needs child and is there ALL the time and the peds staff is wonderful. They even come in on their days off just to check on her and make sure that she is ok or if one of them can't get an IV in her very stubborn and blown veins another will come in on the day off just to try it and she lives over 40 miles away. We have had actual staff at Capital Region tell us to go elsewhere and not use Cap. Region. St. Mary's is never dirty when I am there (which is very often) and the staff are always friendly and helpful, even the cleaning crew and food service know my niece by name and ask how she is doing.

The events that I referred to did happen. I was not blaming the staff. I feel the Medical Unit is often understaffed and they are given too many patients for the level of care that is needed. In my opinion they need more staff on the Medical Unit. St Mary's has been the hospital that our family has used for generations too.
