Your Opinion: Fair Tax proposes unfair burden

Dear Editor:

I wish to respond to the letter in the April 7 edition of the News Tribune regarding the Fair Tax issue. The article stated that we would all be better off and asked how it could be considered unfair if it taxes all classes the same.

On the surface, that sounds like a good idea. However, additional taxes on a $5,000 medical bill would be much more of a burden to someone making $20,000 a year than it would be on someone making $100,000 a year or more. The Fair Tax would allow the more affluent to keep more of their money instead of paying their affordable portion for our government while forcing the poor and middle class to spend a higher percentage of their meager earnings for all the goods and services they receive.

Most low income individuals and families, including the elderly, do not have to pay income tax, so the Fair Tax would be a double whammy! Isn’t it enough that our legislators are giving tax breaks to businesses under the guise of promoting more jobs? I suspect these tax breaks will more likely go into the pockets of the CEOs. If these same CEOs can get our legislators to pass a Fair Tax, how glorious that would be for them.

Why, that would give them even more money with which to pass their political agendas! The term “fair” seems to apply only to children’s games. When it comes to money and taxes, the word fair as used in “Fair Tax” and politics does not seem to apply to those of us in the low to middle economic classes in Missouri.
