Cellular company offers Earth Day tips

In recognition of Earth Day on Friday, U.S. Cellular is sharing how it is reducing its impact on the environment and several ways its customers can help make their communities a little greener.

The company's retail stores are equipped with energy-efficient lighting that reduces energy consumption by 25 percent. More than 90 percent of all computers, electronic equipment and appliances in the stores are Energy Star products that reduce environmental impacts caused by excessive energy use. Products with recycled content, such as carpet, ceilings and furniture, are also used to furnish the stores.

U.S. Cellular officials urge the public to go paperless whenever possible. Customers who chose paperless billing and sign up for autopay can get up to a 5 percent discount on their monthly plan.

According to PayItGreen.com, if 1 million people switched to paperless billing, it would save 400,000 pounds of paper, cut down 6 million pounds of greenhouse gases and prevent 4 million gallons of wastewater from discharging into lakes, streams and rivers in a year.
