Ameren Missouri crews were able to get power restored to 1200 customers on Jefferson City's East Side after an outage occurred early Friday morning.
According to company spokesman Mike Cleary, the outage started around 6 a.m.
"A sleeve that connects electric wires together came apart on an overhead power line near the intersection of S. Lincoln Street and E. McCarty Street," he said. "Whether it was the weather that caused it to come apart or something else, we don't know."
The power outage affected Jefferson City High School, Nichols Career Center, East Elementary and Thorpe Gordon Elementary.
School officials said there was a report of a smell of smoke in the high school cafeteria. The fire department was called and after getting those inside out of the building and making a thorough check, nothing was found and students and staff were allowed to go back in around 7:15 a.m.
Cleary said they got many of those affected by the outage back on-line within an hour or hour-and-a-half by switching to other power sources.
