2 killed as severe storms hit Arkansas

Arkansas officials say two people were killed when severe storms moved through the western part of the state.

Arkansas Department of Emergency Management spokeswoman Renee Preslar said Garland County officials confirmed the fatalities early Friday, but she had no details about what happened.

According to the National Weather Service, the deaths occurred when a tree fell on top of a mobile home. County emergency management coordinator Joy Sanders said the deaths occurred in an area near U.S. 270. Sheriff's Lt. James Martin told KTHV the victims were a 24-year-old male and an 18-month-old girl.

It wasn't immediately clear if a tornado or straight-line winds were at fault. Sanders said there also were reports of roof damage.

The storm was part of a system that spawned tornadoes across the nation's midsection.
