Missouri House panel endorses GOP redistricting plan
Map would put Cole County in 3rd District

With a 10-1 vote, the Missouri House Redistricting Committee on Tuesday afternoon sent Chairman John Diehl’s proposal for redrawing the state’s congressional district lines to the full House for debate.
An hour later, the Rules Committee — which Diehl, R-Town and Country, also chairs — rejected a motion to send the bill back to committee for further discussion.
The House committee’s action also came after members rejected a Democratic alternative, and after no committee member chose to back two other maps submitted by Republicans Marc Ellinger, Cole County’s presiding commissioner, and Jacob Turk, a three-time challenger of U.S. Rep. Emmanuel Cleaver, D-Kansas City.
“We’ve given our committee members ample opportunity to have input into the process,” Diehl told reporters. “And I think everybody thinks they’ve been treated fairly and that this is a fair map.
“I would expect to pick up broad consensus for this.”
The House action leaves lawmakers with only two redistricting bills — one in each chamber — after the Senate Redistricting Committee endorsed a separate bill Monday.
