KC area diocese buys historic downtown KC building

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The Catholic Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph has bought a historic building in downtown Kansas City.

The diocese bought The New York Life Building, Kansas City's oldest skyscraper, which opened in 1890. The Kansas City Star reports that the sale price was $11.7 million.

The diocese will use the building for its administrative offices and for Catholic Charities.

The diocese includes 135,000 Catholics living in 27 counties in west and northwest Missouri.

The property was sold by Kansas City Power & Light Co. The building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, had been empty since 2007.
