KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Kansas City police say thieves peeled copper from two domes on a colonnade at a Kansas City park, causing an estimated $80,000 damage.
Police say about 30 to 40 percent of the copper has disappeared from Kessler Park during the past few weeks.
The copper was installed in November 2004 during work to restore the colonnade, which is more than 100 years old.
Forest Decker, the city's natural resources manager, told The Kansas City Star Monday that the city will repair the domes this winter. He says, however, that the city will likely use some other type of metal than copper, which has been the target of thieves because it can be sold to scrap dealers for high prices.
The city also has installed security cameras at Kessler Park.
