Missouri firearms deer season under way

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) - Hunters in Missouri were expected to kill about 100,000 deer during the opening weekend of firearms deer season this year.

The Missouri Department of Conservation says 52,304 kills were reported statewide on opening day Saturday. Vernon Archer, office manager for the Conservation Departments Springfield office, said by Sunday afternoon the total was up to about 81,000. Hunters had until 10 p.m. to report their kills.

The Springfield News-Leader reports that the opening weekend total last year was 86,202.
