Jefferson City Council to take up surtax deal
Panel will also discuss raising lodging tax
Sunday, November 14, 2010
Two issues in particular on Monday will capture the Jefferson City Council’s focus — the city’s surtax settlement with Cole County and a plan to potentially put a 4-cent increase of the city’s lodging tax on the February 2011 ballot.
About a week ago, Cole County Collector Larry Vincent sent city officials a proposal designed to redistribute surtax funds that were incorrectly distributed among 13 entities because of a mistake made with the surtax formula in 1989.

Tim Flook, a Missouri state representative who chaired the House committee on Job Creation and Economic Development last session, puts it another way. We have economic development backward: The state ought to concentrate on growing employers and high-tech industries, he said. "We need to create primary jobs. Manufacturing, high-tech, insurance and banking. Those kind of things," said Flook, R-Liberty. "Hotels, restaurants, condos, all that stuff will follow."
