Jefferson City Council to take up surtax deal

Panel will also discuss raising lodging tax

Two issues in particular on Monday will capture the Jefferson City Council’s focus — the city’s surtax settlement with Cole County and a plan to potentially put a 4-cent increase of the city’s lodging tax on the February 2011 ballot.

About a week ago, Cole County Collector Larry Vincent sent city officials a proposal designed to redistribute surtax funds that were incorrectly distributed among 13 entities because of a mistake made with the surtax formula in 1989.

Tim Flook, a Missouri state representative who chaired the House committee on Job Creation and Economic Development last session, puts it another way. We have economic development backward: The state ought to concentrate on growing employers and high-tech industries, he said. "We need to create primary jobs. Manufacturing, high-tech, insurance and banking. Those kind of things," said Flook, R-Liberty. "Hotels, restaurants, condos, all that stuff will follow."
