St. Louis ordered to pay $3 million over crash

A St. Louis jury has ordered the city to pay $3 million to a woman who blamed a municipal truck in her 2008 car crash.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that 21-yearold Alnita Smiley said a truck made a right turn at a red light, causing her to swerve to avoid a collision. Her car then struck parked vehicles, overturned and partially ejected her.

Smiley says she sustained head injuries, a severed ear, back injuries and broken ribs.

The woman says she returned to her job but has not worked since early 2009, claiming she has reduced motivation and concentration ability.

Jurors returned the unanimous verdict after a three-day trial.

Nancy Kistler, the deputy city counselor, says the city plans to appeal. She insists that no specific city vehicle or worker was ever identified as having been involved in the crash, meaning there's lacking evidence that the city was to blame.
