Health department sees no brain tumor surge in NW Missouri

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Missouri health officials are confirming a 2008 report that found no greater incidence of brain tumors in the Cameron area than anywhere else in the state.

The state Department of Health and Senior Services said Tuesday its research found no higher clustering of brain tumor cases around the northwest Missouri community. The study area included parts of DeKalb, Daviess, Clinton and Caldwell counties.

The state began studying the issue after people in the Cameron area contacted health officials and news media about what they felt was an unusually high number of brain tumors.

Several possible causes of the brain tumors have been researched, including an area fiber plant, the local water supply and a St. Joseph tannery that gave farmers sludge to use as fertilizer on their fields.
