Veterans Day events on tap this week
Monday, November 8, 2010
In conjunction with Veteran’s Day, several events will be held in Jefferson City for men and women who have served and are currently serving in the armed forces.
The Jefferson City High School Club will host a dinner Wednesday for local veterans. The dinner begins at 4:30 p.m. with a program to follow. While tickets for the dinner are sold out, about 50 seats will be available for the program for those veterans who still wish to attend.
On Veteran’s Day, veterans will also visit schools throughout Cole County to both receive checks and participate in assemblies in conjunction with the Wreaths for Heroes project headed by Pete and Lorraine Adkins, who will speak at the assembly at Simonsen Ninth Grade Center.
There will be a combination of meals and services for veterans and civilians alike to attend. One such event is the St. Peter’s Veteran’s Day Service, in which a Catholic Mass starts at 8:30 a.m.
One of the mainstays of the holiday in Jefferson City is the 11 a.m. ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda, hosted by the Jefferson City Veterans Council.
Another event will be a 2 p.m. visit by soldiers and airmen from the 229th Multifunctional Medical Battalion from the Missouri National Guard to the residents at Villa Marie Nursing Facility.
Rep. Ike Skelton again will speak at the Lincoln University’s ROTC Blue Tiger Battalion’s Veterans Day Breakfast, his 24th year doing so. The breakfast will be at 7 a.m. in the Scruggs University Center on the Lincoln campus.
Another breakfast for veterans will be at Hy-Vee. The kitchen will open at 6 a.m. and will offer scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, hashbrown casserole and biscuits and gravy.
