Meeting Tuesday on sludge test results

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) - State environmental officials have scheduled a meeting Tuesday to discuss tests done on tannery waste found on farms in northwest Missouri.

The state Department of Natural Resources says the public meeting is scheduled for Tuesday evening at the St. Joseph City Hall.

The DNR said in a release that officials will discuss the department's findings on tannery sludge used as agricultural fertilizer and whether the sludge contained hexavalent chromium.

The investigation, which included the Environmental Protection Agency, began in 2009 after residents raised concerns about brain tumors in the area and about the tannery's policy of distributing its waste for use as fertilizer.
