Missouri voters require elected property assessors

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Missouri voters have approved a measure to require the St. Louis County assessor be elected rather than appointed.

Most counties already elect their assessors, and supporters of the constitutional amendment expressed frustration with high assessed property values. The measure was approved last year by the Legislature. It appeared before voters statewide Tuesday because it changes the Missouri Constitution.

Technically, the constitutional amendment requires elections for all assessors in charter counties, which includes Jackson, St. Charles and Jefferson counties. However the assessor already is elected in St. Charles and Jefferson counties. And Jackson County was exempted.
