SAN DIEGO (AP) - The female companion of a suspect who committed suicide after the killing of a San Diego police officer was also fatally shot before police stormed their barricaded bedroom, authorities said Sunday.
Holim Lee's girlfriend, 27-year-old Lucky Xayasene, died of a gunshot wound to the head, the San Diego Medical Examiner reported on its website. The death was ruled a homicide. Police have not specified who fired the shot.
A Medical Examiner's investigator told the San Diego Union Tribune his agency would not determine who fired the fatal round. Generally, ballistics tests are conducted by the San Diego police laboratory.
Both Lee, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, and Xayasene died sometime Wednesday, according to the Medical Examiner.
Their bodies were found alone in the apartment's bedroom Thursday next to several guns, and some eight hours after gunfire broke out with police and U.S. marshals serving a pair of warrants for Lee, a former seaman with the U.S. Coast Guard. Police officer Christopher Wilson was shot and killed during the shootout.
One of the warrants, issued July 30, accused Lee, 30, of assault with a deadly weapon. Another, dated Oct. 19, was issued for violation of terms of his parole in an armed robbery case.
Lee's family told The Associated Press that he had hoped to climb the ranks of the Coast Guard but had turned to drugs and crime after he left the service in 2005.
His brother Hojin Lee said Holim Lee found it "very difficult to live as a civilian."
Wilson, 50, was a 17-year veteran of the city police force with two children.
Lee's family issued a statement saying they were "horrified by the circumstances" of Wilson's death.
Wilson's funeral is set for Thursday.
