Missouri Senate seeks budget-cutting ideas from public

Missouri lawmakers are again seeking ideas from the public for restructuring state government to cut costs.

Last year, the Senate took a rare break from formal floor debates to consider ideas for restructuring state government that were submitted by Missourians.

Republican Senate leader Rob Mayer says he plans to do it again in the first weeks of the annual legislative session that starts next month.

Mayer, of Dexter, says lawmakers need to consider any idea about how to cut spending. Ideas can be submitted anonymously online at a Senate Web page on rebooting state government.

Well I say pay them and hourly rate for the time they are at work, Make them stay in an average hotel like the rest of us do instead of the capitol plaza, No retirement for one eleceted term. I think they should have to do the mandantory buy in retirement like the rest of the state workers.

The Capital Plaza is an average hotel if you actually go inside it, it smells bad and they offer state government rate which the elected officials would get so it is not expensive, their food might be, but it is not great food either, I think the Best Western is probably nicer than the CP now days.

How about just having legislative sessions once every two years like other states (montana, etc.) do?

Quit having all the special sessions.

Do your work early in the session instead of waiting to the last minute or even calling another session to work on important stuff. Quit wasting time on the state dessert, the state reptile, the state tree, etc.

Thousands of ways the legislature can be more efficient and do a better job with less money. I cannot believe they need suggestions from the public.

What if the Legislature only convenes every other year for 3 months, no per-deim, no lobbyist freebies and they take a 50% pay cut? Quite a bit to ask after the austerity of giving up bottled water, coffee and free cell phones last year

And now making their staff go to 4-day weeks and cuts in pay (but no cuts for themselves).
