Eagles cruise to win over Hornets

EUGENE - Five Eugene players scored in double figures Friday night as the Eagles got past the St. Elizabeth Hornets 78-63.

Cody Shaw led the five with a game-high 20 points. Caleb Shaw added 15, while Alex Russell and Hayden Englebrecht totaled 13 each. Kade Frey had 10.

Eugene led 22-15 after one quarter and 33-28 at the half. The Eagles stretched their advantage to 45-35 after three quarters.

Ryan Loethen led St. Elizabeth with 15 points. Caleb Heckemeyer added 13 for the Hornets. Austin Heckemeyer chipped in with 12 and Trenton Holtmeyer had 10.

St. Elizabeth (2-3) will play Monday at Richland.

Eugene (5-2) is off until the Richland Holiday Tournament. The Eagles will open against Belle at 3 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 28.

Eugene won the JV game 55-31.

Russellville 44, Versailles 40

VERSAILLES - The Russellville Indians ralled from a five-point halftime deficit Friday night to defeat the Versailles Tigers 44-40.

Versailles led 16-7 after one quarter and 27-23 at the half. But Russellville used a 14-6 scoring edge in the third quarter to take a three-point lead into the final period.

Rusty Calvin had 12 points to pace the Indians, while Caleb Payne added 10.

Russellville (2-4) will host South Callaway on Monday.

Helias frosh win

SEDALIA - The Helias freshman boys cruised to a 47-22 win over Sedalia on Friday.

Trent Dudenhoeffer had 11 points to pace the Crusaders, who are now 7-2 on the season.

Girls Basketball

Cuba 66, St. Elizabeth 54

CUBA - The St. Elizabeth Lady Hornets dropped a 66-54 decision to Cuba on Friday in the semifinals of the Cuba Tournament.

Morgan Wilde led the Lady Hornets, who trailed 28-27 at the half before being outscored 38-27 in the second half, with 14 points.

Erin Struemph recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Paige Otto added 12.

St. Elizabeth (1-5) will play at 1 p.m. today in the third-place game against Steelville or Laquey.

Helias frosh roll

SEDALIA - The Helias freshman girls basketball team hammered Sedalia 66-9 on Friday night.

Becky Roberts had 16 for the winners, while Megan Napier had 10.

The Lady Crusaders (8-0) will host St. James at 2:30 p.m. today.
