Jefferson City police investigating suspicious package

Jefferson City Police said Saturday they're looking for whoever left a package on the Walmart East parking lot early this weekend.

Police and fire department units were sent to the store, 401 Super Center Dr., after the 911 center was called at 5:21 a.m. Saturday, about a suspicious package on the parking lot.

Local officials asked the Missouri Highway Patrol's bomb squad to investigate.

They "took measures to disable the package," the police news release reported, then determined "the package was not a bomb and was very likely placed on the lot as a prank."

Police said they have determined the source of the package, and were reviewing Walmart's surveillance videos "in an effort to identify possible suspects."

Police on Saturday had not named any suspects, but said their investigation was continuing.
