There’s nothing like getting the season started off on the right foot.

For Blair Oaks, it was nearly a perfect night.

But the Fulton Hornets were a little too strong and wanted it a little bit more in the end, as they were able to win three of the last four matches to pull off a 39-32 win Thursday.

“They’re Class 2 and we’re Class 1 and they’re rated fifth (in the state) and deservedly so,” Blair Oaks coach Tim Karsten said after the Falcons split a triangular with Fulton and New Bloomfield. “They have eight really tough kids.”

Blair Oaks handled New Bloomfield in the final dual of the night. The Wildcats were open at 11 spots, which gave the Falcons 66 easy points. New Bloomfield was pinned in the three other matches at 125, 140 and 285.

But the Falcons didn’t get that kind of gift from Fulton, which was only open at 119. The Hornets ripped off four wins against Blair Oaks in the lidlifter, which started at 145.

Blair Oaks did make a few changes to its starting lineup, as everybody projected to start from 152-189 was shifted up one weight class.

“We had to shift a little to make sure we had everything filled up and we had a couple of seniors we wanted in the lineup,” Karsten said. “We’ll get down to where we need to be, but right now we’re getting experience wrestling good teams.”

The Falcons lost four out of five of those matches from 152-215.

The lone bright spot during that stretch for the Falcons was Caleb Roberts, who pinned Paul Books in 3:41.
