Neighbors rally against Hayselton Drive housing plan
Concerns raised over street access, increased traffic
Wednesday, December 1, 2010
About 60 people showed up for a rally at Wesley United Methodist Church Tuesday evening to express their concerns and find out more information about a proposed new development just off Hayselton Drive.
The development, which is on land owned by both River Bluff Condominiums LLC and Rayma Chinn, would divide the land into 15 parcels for residences, a cul-de-sac at the end, if approved.
The next step in the process for both the members of the neighborhood and the developer is an open house between the two parties from 4-6 p.m. Friday at the Boone-Bancroft conference room in City Hall.

If the residents don't want the subdivision, then they should buy out the developer. Otherwise, the city should stay out of this and let the free market take care of things. For the city to help restrict new development and growth in this horrible economy makes absolutely no sense.

Let me see. 14 lots x $100,000 = way too much for this white- and blue-collar neighborhood. Then let's talk about the cost of the half million dollar houses. Not affordable in this economy by any means. But the developers and city must address the proposed new street that would empty onto a hairpin curve of Hayselton, which is in a high-density neighborhood. Because then the city probably will get involved, eliminating both-side parking on East Circle, which already is unsafe. Heavy construction/utility trucks would be rumbling through for months on end to build infrastructure and then homes. Once it ends, what are the benefits to the city? A bit more property taxes? What are the benefits to all those residents on Hayselton, the Circles, Beverly, Boonville, Paddlewheel, Ware, Riverwood, Lavinia? Well-heeled homeowners, new to the neighborhood, would be setting new rules for longtime neighbors who have maintained and improved their properties over the years only to have others reap the benefits.
