HUGHES
Norma Lee Hughes, age 92, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away peacefully Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at Primrose Retirement Center.
Norma was born on December 22, 1931, in Argyle, Mo., the daughter of Frederick “Fred” Anthony Brunnert and Coletta Christine (Werdenhause) Brunnert Wulff.
Norma was a 1949 graduate of Westphalia High School, Westphalia, Mo. On November 24, 1951, she was joined in marriage to Richard “Dick” Hughes, who passed away in July 1998. To this union was born her nine children.
Norma was employed with the Department of Revenue for a few years in the early 1950’s. She then became a stay-at-home mom for her children; time she truly enjoyed and treasured. Throughout the years, she was both a room and den mother for her active family. Norma spent many hours watching them play sports and rarely missed a game.
In 1973 Norma was employed by the Missouri State Senate in the Enrolling Room, where she made many wonderful and lifelong friends. She retired from the Missouri Senate in 2002.
Norma was a 60+ year member of Immaculate Conception Church. She was a volunteer at the church and school, was a charter member of the Immaculata Club - Salva Mater chapter and a member of the Mother Seton Widows Club. She was a seamstress and self-taught hairdresser, using both talents at home and at the Capitol. In her later years during the pandemic, painting rocks became her favorite pastime.
Norma was immensely proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. They were the light of her life. She loved spending time with them, having all of them for holidays and serving turkey and dumplings – a family favorite.
She enjoyed her many friends and getting together with them for coffee, lunches and dinners. Norma never met a stranger and liked being with people, always finding good in everyone. Friends often commented and teased, “She thinks everyone is nice!”
Survivors include her children, Rick Hughes (Jody), Randy Hughes (Barb), Jana Agniel (Chris), Doug Hughes (Leigh Anne), Denny Hughes (Carole), Scott Hughes (Carly), Kip Hughes (Tessie), Brad Hughes (Andrea); daughter-in-law, Lori Hughes; brother, Don Brunnert (Gloria); 35 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, and four on the way; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
