MCALLISTER David Alan McAllister, 66, of Jefferson City, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, June 21, 2023. He was born on October 14, 1956, in Marceline, Mo, to George and Erma McAllister. He grew up on the family farm outside o.f Mendon, Mo, and loved to spend as much time there as he could throughout his life, referring to it as God’s Country. He graduated as salutatorian from Northwestern High School in Mendon in 1974. David received his B.S. in Education, 1978, from the University of Missouri-Columbia. While an undergraduate at MU, he served as a Resident Assistant in Hatch & Schurz Halls and on the first coed dorm committee. Following his graduation, he was the Director of Student Activities at Jefferson College, Hillsboro, Mo., from 1978-81, where he met his wife, Lura, with whom he celebrated their 43rd anniversary on June 8, 2023. After receiving his Juris Doctorate from MU in 1983, he had a solo law practice in Brunswick, Mo., from 1984-94 and served as Salisbury, Mo., City Attorney from 1987-94 and as Chariton County Prosecuting Attorney from 1989-94. From 1994-96, he was with the Parsons & Wilson, P.C., law firm in Dexter, Mo. From 1996-2006 he served as an Assistant Attorney General for the Mo Medicaid Fraud and Elder Abuse Unit. From 2006-21, he was Deputy Counsel for the Missouri Department of Conservation. He was an author and reviewer of CLE publications by The Missouri Bar, a speaker at various state and national conferences, and he litigated a variety of cases, including appearing before the Missouri Supreme Court. He retired from the practice of law in 2021. Among many interests, David was an avid sports fan, especially of University of Missouri football and basketball, Royals baseball, and Kansas City Chiefs football, and he loved attending those events with his sons. He served as President of the Jefferson City High School Jays Football Booster Club in 2002. He became a lifetime member of the University of Missouri Alumni Association in 1984 and served as president of the Chariton County chapter. He organized the United Methodist Men’s group, the Pumpkin Patch fund-raiser, and the Community Pinwheel Garden, all at Wesley United Methodist Church in Jefferson City. He was also a lay speaker for the Methodist Church for several years. He was a life-long Democrat. He was currently serving on the University of Missouri Cole County Extension Council. He enjoyed reading, gardening, and feeding the birds, delighting in attracting Baltimore orioles and bluebirds. He and Lura loved to travel in the U.S. (visiting all 50 states) and abroad. David was predeceased by his father, George Lloyd McAllister; his brother, Steven Lee McAllister; his maternal grandparents, John Frederick and Elsie May (McPherson) Steinbeck and his paternal grandparents, Delphus Roy and Martha Mary (Switzer) McAllister; and his nephew, Benjamin Caleb Laws. David is survived by his wife Lura (Jacob) McAllister of the home; sons Eric Steven McAllister, Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Ryan Andrew McAllister, Columbia, Mo; his mother, Erma Helen (Steinbeck) McAllister, Mendon, Mo.; his sisters and their spouses, Shirley and Richard Leppin, Mendon, Mo.; Margaret and Doug Prewitt, Pleasant Valley, Mo.; Jennifer and Randy Sapp, St. Joseph, Mo.; and Laurie McAllister, Columbia, Mo., and 14 nieces and nephews. Visitation will be 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 8, 2023, at Living Hope Church, Jefferson City, followed by a Memorial Service at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Mark Kiekhaefer officiating. Light refreshments will follow. Inurnment will be at Mendon Cemetery at a later date.
