Michael E. Mertens

Michael E. Mertens, 73, of Jefferson City, Missouri, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2022, at his home. He was born on January 16, 1949, in Jefferson City, a son of the late Edmund and Kathryn (Nichols) Mertens. Michael was born with cerebral palsy and attended the Peter Pan School in Jefferson City where he had many friends. Michael loved meal time and was known to sneak food off of his neighbor's plate. He especially loved ice cream and going for joy rides. He lived at the Tanner Bridge group home for almost 40 years and had made many life long friends who were more like family. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his brother, Kendal Mertens of Jefferson City; sister, Cheryl Bratten (Steve); and nephews, Chris and David Bratten. Friends will be received on Monday, August 22, 2022 from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at Houser-Millard Funeral Directors. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, August 23, 2022, at Riverview Cemetery at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be Cole County Residential Services or Hospice Compassus of Central Missouri.
