Robert Leon Sommerer

Robert Leon Sommerer, 78, of California, Missouri, died Friday, June 12, 2020, at his home. He was born June 8, 1942, in Jefferson City, a son of Edward and Edna (Hoffman) Sommerer. Robert served in the United States Army in Vietnam during the Vietnam War, earning the Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars. He worked for the Missouri Department of Transportation on a bridge crew and later a striping crew until his retirement after 27 years. He was a people person that liked helping people and was always available when needed. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church at Honey Creek where he used to work around the church and do the mowing. Robert was a member of the American Legion Post 5 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1003. Robert was an avid Willie Nelson fan, enjoyed going to the casino and just overall enjoyed life. Survivors include two sisters, Carolyn (Fred) Hammond of Lee's Summit, Missouri, Lucille (John) Williamson of El Paso, Texas; six nephews and one niece. He was preceded in death by a sister, Margie Sommerer; brother, John Sommerer; and sister-in-law, Carolyn Sommerer. Friends will be received from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 16, 2020, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, where funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Rick Foss officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow in the church cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church or VFW Post 1003.
