William "Bill" Russell Murry

The Rev Doctor William "Bill" Russell Murry, died on Thursday, July 6, 2017, in Rockville, Md. Bill was born in Jefferson City, the son of Homer Russell and Margaret Leach Murry, and held degrees from Oklahoma Baptist University, Yale Divinity School and Drew University's PH.D. program. He was the Minister Emeritus of the River Road Unitarian Universalist (UU) Congregation of Beth esda, Md. and past President and Academic Dean of Meadville Lombard Theological School in Chicago, Ill. Minister, educator, scholar and author, Bill was a strong preacher and passionate advocate for social justice. His tenure at Meadville Lombard saw significant institutional revitalization and growth. He wrote three books on Religious Humanism and was a frequent preacher and lecturer at churches around the country. In June he received the first "Lifetime Achievement Award" from the UU Humanist Association for "extraordinary contributions to Religious Humanism and Unitarian Universalism." He is survived by his wife, Barbara Wesp Murry; sons, Brian, Jon and Chris; four grandchildren; and sister, Jane King. Funeral arrangements provided by Robert A. Pumphrey Funeral Home, Bethesda, Md.
