Shirley Jean Schmitz, 79, of Jefferson City, passed away Sunday, November 3, 2013, at Capital Region Medical Center. She was born June 22, 1934, in Ashland, Missouri, the daughter of the late Lawrence and Mabel (Nichols) Bennett. On July 18, 1953, she was united in marriage to Cletus "Pete" Schmitz, who preceded her in death. Shirley attended Southern Boone High School in Ashland. She was employed with ABB from 1972 to 1995. She was then employed at McDonald's on Missouri Blvd., McAllister's and Culvers. Shirley enjoyed watching Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz and Oprah Winfrey Show, listening to country music, collecting Beanie Babies and Longaberger baskets, and going to Wal-Mart. Most of all she loved spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by three daughters: Rhonda Nichols of Webb City, Cherie Schmitz of Jefferson City and Linda Jones of Jefferson City; two brothers: Claude "Tony" Bennett (Betty) of Holts Summit and Jimmy Bennett (Carletta) of Columbia; four grandchildren: Joe, Jaime, Josh and Jared; and four great- grandchildren: Hayden, Hunter, Harper and Marlee. She was preceded in death by six siblings: Opal, Ruth, Dorothy, Richard, Eul "Creedy" and Jane. Friends will be received from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 6, 2013, at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home where a funeral service will follow at 6:00 p.m. with Rev. Murl Nash officiating.
