Darwin (D.J.) Maier, 85, of California, Mo., passed away on Friday, November 1, 2013, at The Bluffs in Jefferson City, Mo. He was born on May 16, 1928, in Jefferson City, Mo., the son of Fred W. and Lydia (Sauer) Maier, both of whom preceded him in death. He graduated from California High School in 1945, and was drafted into the Army in November of 1950. He joined the Missouri National Guard in 1953, and worked for the Guard full time, retiring with over 30 years of service in 1981. Darwin was a lifetime member of the Missouri National Guard Association and also the United States National Guard Association. He belonged to the American Legion Post 5 in Jefferson City, Mo., the California Eagles Aerie 4027 and was a member of the United Church of Christ in California, Mo. He is survived by one daughter, Dr. Linda S. Maier Kolchin and husband Fred of Huntsville, Ala.; one son, Gary W. Maier with wife Christy of Louisville, Ky.; three grandchildren, Zachary and wife Brittney, Joseph and Kylie of Louisville, Ky. and one brother, Bill Maier and wife Ruth of California, Mo. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Leanna Jean Maier in 1958. Funeral Services will be on Friday, November 8, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. at the United Church of Christ in California. Officiating will be the Rev. Andrew Lovins. Interment with full military honors will be at Riverview Cemetery in Jefferson City, Mo. Visitation will be on Thursday, November 8, 2013, from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Friends of the Finke or the California U.C.C. c/o Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Service.
