John Davis Hickey, age 79, of Jefferson City, passed away on Thursday, September 13, 2012, at St. Mary's Health Center. He was born July 16, 1933, near Tuscumbia, and raised on a farm near St. Elizabeth, the son of Omar and Sallie Ann (Shackleford) Hickey. During his early adult years, he lived in St. Louis, where he met his wife, Margie Hickey. They were married in 1962 and remained as such until his death. John was a 1951 graduate of St. Elizabeth High School. He briefly attended the University of Missouri-Columbia, and also served in the United States Army. He, his wife, and son eventually moved to St. Elizabeth where he assisted his father with the family farm while also working full-time at ABB in Jefferson City, from which he retired. All of the family eventually moved to and lived in Jefferson City. John was known by many people and the impression he left on them was lasting. All who knew him referred to him as a "great and wonderful guy." His family had the privilege of experiencing his love, compassion, forgiveness, sharing, and ultimately the most precious gift, his time. He enjoyed many things (too many to list) but some of them include fishing, farming, auto racing, coaching, and virtually anything that involved sharing time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. John is survived by his wife, Margie; son, John Hickey and his wife Penny; daughter, Linda Clanahan; two sisters, Gladys Doerhoff and Wanda Shelton; grandchildren, Hershe (Anderson) Hill and her husband John, Michael Anderson and his wife Crystal, Michael Clanahan, Rhianne Hickey, and Rhielle Hickey; great-grandchildren, Christopher Carver, Quintin Anderson, Isaiah Clanahan, Dylan Fisher, Hunter Anderson, Malayna Anderson, John Hill, Charlie Hill, Tony Hill, Amber Hill, Kelly Hill, Preston Hill, and Brandon Hill. He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Gayla Miller. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff of St. Mary's Health Center for their loving care provided in his remaining days. Friends will be received from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sunday, September 16, 2012, at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 17, 2012, at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Livingston Cemetery near St. Anthony and Tuscumbia. Arrangements are under the direction of HOUSER-MILLARD Funeral Directors, 2613 West Main Street, (573) 636-3838. Condolences may be left for the family online at www.millardfamilychapels.com
