John Lee "Booker" Stokes, age 55, of Dixon, departed this life Saturday, December 11, 2010, at his residence near Dixon in Maries County. John was born September 20, 1955, at Waynesville, a son of John Allen and Bernice Marie (Hake) Stokes. John was united in marriage on March 9, 1985, at Vienna, to Miss Debbie Ann Thompson and to this union, two children were born. John was a Trustee of the Vienna-Bassett Eagles Club, Aeries No. 4340 and a former member of the Vienna Gun Club. He loved to be outdoors, especially when he was hunting, fishing or camping and just being with family and friends. John was an over-the- road truck driver for most of his working life. Those left to mourn the passing of John include: his wife, Debbie Stokes, of the home near Dixon; one son, Joseph Stokes, Dixon; one daughter, Sarah Stokes, Iberia; one beloved grandson, Colin; one brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Ruth Stokes, Taos; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Beverly and Tom Norton, Dixon, Marsha and Greg Colvin, Iberia, and Peggy and David Volmert, St. Thomas; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charles "Bill" and Doris Thompson, Steadman; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Kevin and Kim Thompson, Vienna, Rhonda Lowe and Bobby, Kansas City, and Rick Thompson, St. Louis; 16 nephews and nieces; 13 great-nephews and nieces; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father on November 10, 1985, and his mother on February 19, 2005. Funeral services for John will be conducted at 11 a.m., Friday, December 17, 2010, in the Citizens Civic League Hall, corner of Olive and 5th Street, Meta, with Rev. Karen Alden, Vienna United Methodist Church, officiating. The family has chosen Southside Cemetery, Meta. Visitation will be 10-11 a.m., Friday, December 17, 2010, also at the Citizens Civic League Hall, Meta. Memorials are suggested by the family to the St. Jude's Childrens Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee, with envelopes available at the Vienna Office of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes. All arrangements are under the direction of the Vienna Chapel of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes.
