Herbert "Herb" Kreter, 87, of Jefferson City, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 11, 2021, at the Harry S. Truman Veteran's Hospital. He was born on May 1, 1933 in Bay, Missouri, a son of the late Augustis and Emma (Krueger) Kreter. He was united in marriage to Mayme Belle Schroeder on December 23, 1953. Herb left high school early to work on the family farm. In April of 1953 he was drafted into the United States Navy. He served during the Korean War on an air craft carrier as a plane mechanic. He was honorably discharged in March of 1961. On returning to civilian life Herb began working for Ford Motor Company in Jefferson City and retired after 25 years of employment. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was known for his work ethic and was a proud veteran. Herb was a member of the American Legion Post 5, where he held the office of Commander (twice), Navy Club Skipper, and Chef de Guar of the 40th & 8th. His greatest joy was making memories with his children and grandchildren. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his children, Kathleen Menter, Steve Kreter (Margaret), Chris Menter and Justina Salarano (Paul); fiancée, Glenda Hake; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Herb was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Mae; and siblings, Raymond Kreter, Ethel Schollmeyer and Selma Hanson. Family and friends will be received on Monday, January 18, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. at Houser-Millard Funeral Directors. Memorial service will begin at 11:00 a.m. with inurnment to follow at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens with full military honors. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Legion Post #5 of Jefferson City.
