William E. Wood, 86, of Jefferson City, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 29, 2020 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on February 19, 1934 in Moberly, Missouri, a son of the late Francis W. and Corinne (Dry) Wood. Bill enjoyed a long happy marriage to Phyllis Moore. Bill was a 1952 graduate of Jefferson City High School. In 1956, he joined the United States Army. As a young man in the army, Bill was proud to be selected to be part of the Military Distant Early Warning Radar Program. After his term of service, Bill completed his degree at Lincoln University and went on to complete his graduate studies at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He was a much-loved professor at Lincoln University and retired after 34 years of dedicated service as Professor Emeritus. Bill cared deeply for his students and they in return respected him as a teacher and friend. He was a member of First Christian Church. Bill was a wiz at finding practical solutions to real-life mechanical and engineering problems. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with Phyllis and daughter, Barbara, at their lake home. He was a dog lover and over the years had many faithful companions. Bill will be greatly missed by friends and family. He is survived by his wife: Phyllis Wood; daughter: Barbara Wood; sister: Mary Sharon Rodgers; sister-in-law: Dr. Nan Booth; brothers-in-law: Doug Moore (Michele) and Bill Rodgers; nieces: Nancy, Becky and Lauri; nephews: John, Joe and Michael. Bill was preceded in death by his parents and brother: Dr. Francis E. Wood. A private family entombment was held at Riverview Cemetery. A celebration of Bill's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that expressions of sympathy be made to Hospice Compassus of Central Missouri.
