Harriet "Sue" Hicks, 78, of Jefferson City, Missouri, passed away on Thursday, October 8, 2020, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on August 1, 1942 in Marston, Missouri, a daughter of the late Roland Edward and Margaret Imogene (Brown) Tetley. Sue was united in marriage on February 13, 1960 to E. Leon Hicks in Harrison, Arkansas. Sue was a 1960 graduate of Eldon High School. She earned a Masters Degree in Education from Lincoln University in 1973 and an Education Specialist Degree from Central Missouri State in Warrensburg in 1986. Sue was employed with the Eldon School District where she was a fourth grade Teacher and Assistant Principal at South Elementary from 1973 until 1988. In 1988, she began working for the Jefferson City School District as a Counselor where she served until her retirement. Throughout her retirement, she continued helping others by teaching at Lincoln University for over 15 years and Columbia College for five years. She was a member of the Missouri State Teacher's Association, MSTA. Sue attended First Baptist Church in Eldon from 1959 to 1961 and again from 1963 to 1993 while living there. During their time in Jefferson City, Sue and Leon attended Memorial Baptist Church from 1961 to 1963 and then Concord Baptist Church from 1993 until present. Sue enjoyed cooking, sewing and reading. She was a devoted Christian woman who loved the Lord and a loving wife who helped guide others to keep the faith throughout their lives. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who always put her family first. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Leon; daughters: Kelly Barninger (husband John), Paige Madson (David); son: Michael Leon Hicks (wife Bronwen); sisters: Lana Wegner (husband Gary); Priscilla Zuidema (husband Ralph) and Elaine Fisher; grandchildren: Emily Garrison, Andrew Barninger, Meg Barninger, Michael Hicks, Tyler Hicks, Ashlee Collins, Matthew Madson, Logan Madson, Silas Hicks and Courtney Twitchell; great-grandchildren: Ryan Garrison, Adriane Hicks, Raylyn Collins, Audrey Collins and Hank Garrison; as well as many nieces, nephews, family and friends. Sue was preceded in death by her parents and infant brother: Roland Edward Tetley Jr. Friends will be received from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 23, 2020 at Concord Baptist Church. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2020 at Concord Baptist Church with Rev. Monte Shinkle officiating. Interment will immediately follow in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens. The family requests that the general public follow social distancing guidelines and wear a protective mask while in attendance.
