Benjamin Leon Benton 90, of Oak Grove, Mo., passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, July 12, 2020. He was born on November 4, 1929, in Corapeake, N.C. to Annie Blanche and Benjamin Leon Benton Sr. Upon leaving high school, Leon made a career out of the United States Air Force and retired in 1970, when he moved his family to Russellville, Mo. He then became a high school teacher at Jefferson City High School where he taught Air Force Jr. ROTC. While stationed in Korea during the Korean War, he served as a Military Policeman, and received a Purple Heart for an injury while on duty. He was also a member of a country band while stationed in the military who played for charity events. Leon enjoyed music and loved to sing and play the guitar. He sang in a Gospel Bluegrass band in his later years. He was also a Mason and a Shriner. He had many hobbies throughout his 90 years including bowling, fishing, camping, playing the guitar and bass, singing and dancing, and was also a Cub Scout leader. Leon was blessed with the gift of joke telling and everyone who knew him knew he was known for telling jokes! In 1957, he married Shirley L Andrews Benton and was married to her until her death in 1992. He married again in 1995, to Dorothy J. Sales Benton until her death in 2005. He was also preceded in death by a son, Robert L. Benton and a grandson Christopher R. Benton. He is survived by his children, Vicky Benton of Fresno, Calif., John Benton of Russellville, Mo., Jeffrey Benton of Grandview Iowa, and Larry Benton of Daytona, Fla. and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his three sisters, Daisy Webb of Fresno, Calif.. Edna Paczkowski of Wellington, Fla., and Shirley Sheely of Buda, Texas. Funeral services will be held at a later date.
