Cardinals to name Marmol as manager today

The St. Louis Cardinals began the 2021 postseason with Mike Shildt as their manager. His replacement is expected to be named before the World Series begins.

The Cardinals announced they will hold a press conference at 10 a.m. today. The specifics of the press conference were not released in the announcement.

However, shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday, Katie Woo of The Athletic posted on Twitter the Cardinals will name Oliver Marmol as the team's next manager this morning, sources told her and Ken Rosenthal.

Marmol, 35, has served at St. Louis' bench coach since the start of the 2019 season. Before that, he was the Cardinals' first-base coach for two seasons, and he has also coached in the organization's minor league system.

Marmol was drafted by the Cardinals in the sixth round of the 2007 MLB Draft of out College of Charleston. He mostly played as a middle infielder and was promoted as high as advanced Single-A in the minor leagues through 2010.

According to Baseball Reference, Marmol was a manager for three of the Cardinals' minor league affiliates: Johnson City in Rookie League (2012), State College in short-season Single- A (2013-14) and Palm Beach in advanced Single-A (2015-16). Marmol compiled a 268-225 record in those five seasons.

Shildt was also the Cardinals' bench coach before he took over as manager midway through the 2018 season, replacing Mike Matheny.

Shildt was 252-199 in three-plus seasons with the Cardinals, leading the team to three consecutive playoff appearances.
