Prep Volleyball: Helias wins tourney title

JACKSON - The Helias Lady Crusaders went 5-1-1 on Saturday, finishing with a three-set win against Valle Catholic to win the Jackson Tournament.

Helias started the day going 2-1-1 in pool play. The Lady Crusaders started with a pair of sweeps, defeating Mehlville 25-7, 25-18 and Perryville 25-22, 25-11.

Jackson topped Helias 25-20, 25-21, and the Lady Crusaders finished pool play with a split against Nerinx Hall, taking the first set 26-24 and dropping the second set 26-28, to place third in their pool.

In bracket play, Helias opened with a 25-14, 25-19 win against Farmington in the quarterfinals. The Lady Crusaders then avenged their loss to Jackson with a 25-18, 28-26 semifinal victory.

Helias capped its busy day with a 25-14, 20-25, 25-16 win against Valle Catholic.

Chapel Dobbs led Helias with 62 kills in the tournament, while Jacie Buschjost had 32 kills and Lauren Strope added 21 kills. Landrey VanOverschelde finished with 80 assists, while Grace Verslues had 59 assists.

Annica Luebbering led the way with 70 digs, followed by Buschjost with 39, Verslues with 31, VanOverschelde with 30 and Beth Luebbert with 25.

Summer Hake had a team-best 16 blocks and Luebbert served nine aces.
