Helias falls to Bolivar in Class 1 tennis quarterfinals

BOLIVAR - The Helias Lady Crusaders matched their deepest postseason run in program history Tuesday, defeating Mount Vernon 5-2 in the Class 1 sectionals before losing 5-0 to Bolivar in the state quarterfinals.

Against Mount Vernon, Helias dropped two of the three doubles matches. However, the Lady Crusaders clinched the match by winning four singles matches.

Mary Lorang won her singles match to tie the dual at 2, then Catie Meystrik won to give the Lady Crusaders the lead. Sydney Drinkard won her singles match in a tiebreaker and Samantha Schlacks won in straight sets to seal the win for Helias.

Helias also reached the Class 1 quarterfinals in 2018, its previous state tournament appearance.

Individual scores from the duals against Mount Vernon and Bolivar were not available at presstime.

Helias ends the season with an 11-8 dual record.
