The Capital City Lady Cavaliers won the school's first team district championship in any sport Wednesday, claiming the Class 2 District 4 girls tennis championship with a 5-3 dual win against the Jefferson City Lady Jays at Capital City High School.
Capital City (15-5), the No. 2 seed in the district, advances to the Class 2 state quarterfinals and will host District 2 champion Ladue (11-4) on Monday.
The Lady Cavaliers won all three doubles matches.
At No. 1, Sarah Wilde and Abby Gooch won 9-7 against Sandhiya Baskar and Cora Wood. Dahlia Penserum and Manvee Vuppala defeated Olivia Littrell and Esha Pattan 8-2 at No. 2, and Ella Pea and Carly Carron won 8-3 against Emmarie Graham and Anagha Garikapaty.
Up next was singles play, where Jefferson City picked up three wins.
At No. 1, Baskar defeated Wilde 6-4, 6-4, improving her singles season record to 28-0. Wood defeated Gooch 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles, while Graham won 6-4, 6-3 against Pea at No. 5.
Capital City clinched the dual with two singles wins. Vuppala won 6-4, 6-4 against Pattan at No. 2, while Carron won 6-3, 6-1 against Littrell at No. 6.
Penserum won the opening set 6-2 against Garikapaty at No. 4, and the match was stopped during the second set when the Lady Cavaliers clinched.
Jefferson City, the district's No. 1 seed, ends its team season with a 9-6 record.
Baskar will represent the Lady Jays in the Class 2 singles state tournament, which begins Oct. 14 at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield. Wilde will also represent the Lady Cavaliers in the singles state tournament.
