Lady Jays capture title at Webb City Invitational

WEBB CITY - The Jefferson City Lady Jays captured team honors Friday at the Webb City Invitational.

The Lady Jays topped the 10-team field with 165 points. Webb City was second with 131, while Carl Junction was third with 119.

Jefferson City won six events in the Invitational, led by Ezinne Opara's two victories. Opara was first in the long jump (5.38 meters) and triple jump (11.46 meters).

Elicia Theroff won a third field event for the Lady Jays, taking first in the high jump (1.52 meters).

Seleena Morris of the Lady Jays was first int he 400-meter dash (1:04.03). Morris also joined Theroff, Rhakala Blackmon and Dijonay Dawson on the first-place 4x400-meter relay team (4:11.83).

Jefferson City's other win came from the team of Riley Schonhardt, Bryla Taplin, Blackmon and Dawson in the 4x200-meter relay (1:47.26).

The Lady Jays had four second-place finishes - Blackmon in the 100-meter hurdles (16.45), Opara in the 100-meter dash (13.25), Dawson in the 200-meter dash (25.92) and the 4x100-meter relay team of Theroff, Opara, Taplin and Emmarie Graham (49.67).

The 4x800-meter relay team of Morris, Hallie Smith, Ella Jobe and Alexis Barnes was third (11:34.41). Individuals taking third were Blackmon in the 300-meter hurdles (48.43) and Anna York in the discus (30.55 meters).

On the boys side, Jefferson City was fourth with 81 points.

David Bethune won the 100-meter dash (11.37) for the Jays, while Elijah Hardin was first in the 400-meter dash (51.65).

Taking second for Jefferson City were Andrew Nield in the 800-meter run (2:00.47) and the 4x200-meter relay team of Hardin, Jacob Wilson, Charles Burns and Bethune (1:34.07).

Bethune was third in the 200-meter dash (23.13), while the 4x800-meter relay team of Obanadab Archibong, James Knoll, Nield and Seth Stumbaugh was third (8:43.60).

Webb City was first in the 10-team standings with 175.5 pints, followed by Joplin (131) and Willard (129).
